The Fishermen's Mission regional fundraising manager is set for an appearance on BBC's relaunch of Ready, Steady, Cook.

Julian Waring, who is based in Helston, spotted that the show were looking for contestants and together with his colleague Dean Lawrence put together an application form.

“It was a straightforward application and then the producer interviewed us on a live Skype chat and before we knew it, we were being sent the dates and details to film at the BBC Glasgow studios.”

Mr Lawrence added, “It was quite a surreal experience, walking into the BBC studios, experiencing the different teams from production to make up, everyone was so friendly and excited about the new show. We started filming at 3pm and before we knew it, it was 7pm.

It is exactly like you see on TV, you don’t know which chefs you are going to be paired with the timing for the cooking is real. I looked over and by the time Julian peeled a carrot and burnt the milk the 30 minutes was up!”

Mr Waring was paired with Great British Menu winner Ellis Barrie, whilst Mr Lawrence was joined by award-winning chef Anna Haugh. The series starts Monday, March 2 and is hosted by former X-Factor and Celebrity Big Brother contestant Rylan Clark-Neal.

After recording the show, two Cornish volunteers commemorated the occasion in a novel way.

“When I returned to Cornwall, two local volunteers offered to craft the famous red tomato and green pepper from wood. It was wonderful to witness the skill of David and Harry turn mahogany and pine into two perfect shapes in days. They are now both pride of place in the chefs' restaurants."

The Fishermen’s Mission is a charity that provides emergency support alongside practical, financial, spiritual and emotional care for active or retired fishermen, and their families.
