St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Falmouth held a charity event in aid of Fairtrade.

The fundraising event aimed to raise both money and awareness on the benefits for all in purchasing Fairtrade products.

The morning included a presentation given by the Year 5 children speaking to an audience of friends and family, explaining the benefits of Fairtrade for both consumers and encouraging the purchasing of Fairtrade products in supermarkets.

The venue was filled with school children and teachers alike in fancy dress to commemorate World Book Day, which fell on the same date, from Dorothy from Wizard of Oz, to a teacher dressed as a banana. The stalls were bursting with cakes and biscuits, the opportunity to buy raffle ticket, and a stall dedicated to buying Fairtrade products.

Co-op member pioneer, Lesley Perkins, said: “St Mary’s is celebrating Fairtrade day today – as a recipient of the Community Social Fund, contributions from people spending their money in local Co-op stores helps funding in St Mary’s.

"The school is one of three local beneficiaries, so the more people spend at the Co-op, the more contributions that are directed to the school. It’s also lovely to see the children so knowledgeable on the Fairtrade Foundation.”

There was a great turnout for the Fairtrade event, with family, friends, schoolchildren and schoolteachers enjoying their coffee and cakes, raising money and awareness for a wonderful cause.
