WENDRON United manager Jack Greenwood was delighted with the manner of his side’s victory in their 4-0 win at home to Callington Town on Saturday.

Owing to the recent wet weather, the Dron were playing for the first time in more than month, but two goals from Kian Thomas and one from each of Jack Noy and Jack Stocker gave the home side a commanding half-time lead, before going on to secure just their fourth clean sheet of the season after the break.

“We’ve needed that,” Greenwood said. “If you were to script it and you would say if we could keep a clean sheet and win by three or four goals having not played for over a month, that’s exactly what we would have asked for.

“The boys were superb today, bearing in mind they just haven’t played for so long. I know it’s the same for Callington, but I thought we were at it from the start today. I thought we moved the ball well, I thought the third goal particularly was very, very good.

“We played some nice football today but it was all about their attitude so I’m really pleased with how the boys responded to what’s been a difficult time off the pitch and the added factor that we haven’t actually played for five weeks.”

Seeing the front three of Thomas, Noy and Stocker all scoring was especially pleasing for Greenwood, who has suffered the blow of losing his two main strikers, TJ Walter and Rory Jarvis, in recent weeks.

While Wendron were winning 4-0 on Saturday, Walter, who is Wendron’s top scorer with 13 goals this season, made a scoring debut for Falmouth Town in their 5-0 win at home to Sticker, for whom the Dron’s 2018/19 top scorer Rory Jarvis has joined.

“Kian [Thomas] has made a statement today, so has Jack [Noy], so has Stocker,” Greenwood said. “All three of them have pretty much made it so they can’t be dropped for Tuesday by doing what they’ve asked me to do and score goals. It’s really pleasing that initially we haven’t felt the loss of losing last year’s top goal scorer in Rory and this year’s current top goal scorer TJ.

“They’re big characters in the changing room and they’re big characters on the pitch, but ever since I’ve taken over we’ve been used to losing players and something good has always come from that, so I’m much more positive about it than I used to be when I first took over.”

He added: “If we’re producing players that are doing well, unfortunately it’s par for the course that, yes, they’re going to be picked off, and it’s easy for clubs to come and say, ‘Wendron have got a good player, then we’ll take him’, but they’re not the only good players.

“We’ve got some fantastic players and players that were there today who showed how good they are and have been incredibly loyal and have been here for a couple of years or for four or five years.

“Yes, it might be a certain type of manager that can put up with those leaving but walking back into the changing room today and seeing those faces that are still there makes it worthwhile.”

Wendron United are back in action on Tuesday night when Camelford visit the Underlane in the SWPL Premier West.
