Two students from Falmouth have taken first prizes in a highly regarded Cornish art competition.

Roberta Jenkins and Gabriel Higgins were successful in this year's Young People's Art Prize run by Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange, with a number of other Falmouth School students shortlisted.

This year's theme was "What is your issue?"

Roberta took top spot in the 11 to 13 years category with her mixed media piece called "Protest". Fellow students Eva Reid, Zoe Leonard and Ava Rudolph were also shortlisted in this category.

Gabriel won first place in the 14 to 16 years category with a thought-provoking painting about the production of milk. Grace Bennett, Phoebe Hulme and Tegan Underwood were shortlisted in this category.

Art teacher at Falmouth School, Rowena Tarplee, said: “A huge well done must go to everyone. We are extremely proud of the talents of our artists and the creativity of students of Falmouth School.”

As Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange are currently closed due to coronavirus, they plan to exhibit the shortlisted and winning work online in a virtual gallery that view on their website at newlynartgallery.co.uk/activities/ypap-2020 or Facebook page.
