Those inspired by the efforts that primary school teachers have gone to during these extraordinary times now have the opportunity to follow in their footsteps.

Truro and Penwith College is offering a brand-new two-year Foundation Degree (FdA) in Teaching and Learning, ready for students to start in September 2020.

Flexibility and employability are key to this course and unlike other university level courses, FdA Teaching and Learning is delivered one day per week and timetabled from 1pm – 8pm.

This means that learners can maximise their in-work hours and still fit life around their lectures.

With modules in creative education, health and wellbeing, curriculum and child progress and development, learners on the course will be well equipped with the most up to date knowledge that they will be able to use within schools.

Building on 25 years’ experience delivering higher-level education courses, FdA Teaching and Learning has been written with assistance from primary school head teachers, multi-academy trust professionals and primary initial teacher trainers.

Primary school teacher, Jess Fenton, started her career journey when she completed a foundation degree in education at the college, specialising in children and young people.

She said: “I just loved studying at the college. It never felt overwhelming. It was fun and you get to meet people. I loved the foundation degree.”

“My work-placement was at the Dreadnought Centre in Pool (a charity working with children and young people focusing on helping them through a wide range of social issues) from that, I went on to a volunteering placement that I did every Monday evening.”

From the foundation degree, Jess progressed on to the BA (Hons) Education.

She said “Even now I’m teaching full time, I use what I learned on my placement and that helps support the children and their families. That is the kind of life experience that you probably wouldn’t have challenged yourself to get otherwise. Truro College pushes you to go out and get these experiences.”

Students who complete the FdA Teaching and Learning can also progress within the college on to the one-year top-up degree, BA (Hons) Education and Training.
