An act of kindness from a Year 10 student from Camborne Science and International Academy (CSIA) has helped her local food bank.

Lily Hawkins volunteered her time during the Easter holidays to help sort food in the Camborne, Pool and Redruth Food Bank, at a time when it’s in increased demand due to Covid-19.

“We are very proud of Lily for showing incredible kindness and compassion in such challenging circumstances,” said Mrs Rachel Trevarthen, assistant principal at CSIA.

“Food banks across the country are strained as volunteers isolate and demand surges during the pandemic.

"Lily wanted to make a difference to her local community so volunteered her time to be with the CPS Food Bank to support this vital service.”

Lily, from Camborne, decided to volunteer having seen how challenging it is for food banks to operate in epidemic conditions.

With increased demand, issues around securing food supplies and a lack of volunteers, Lily knew that she could do something to help.

“Lily is one of the Aztec House Captains and is demonstrating the true CSIA spirit here,” said Mrs Trevarthen.

“We are all immensely proud of her selfless, generous and kind act; well done and thank you Lily!”

With a large proportion of volunteers over 70 and self-isolating, many food banks are calling on younger supporters, and for additional help with food supplies.

“Lily encompasses the values at the core of CSIA’s school community,” added CSIA principal, Mr Ian Kenworthy.

“During these unprecedented times, staff, students and parents/carers have been tested to the limit and all have risen to the challenge. We could not be prouder of our school community.

"I wish to thank the outstanding efforts of Lily and everyone who is going above and beyond to support the national emergency.”
