A manhunt involving the police helicopter and search dogs was underway in Penryn last night after a BMW rammed a police car before driving off.

A car of the same description was subsequently found on fire nearby.

The drama unfolded at around 11.30pm in Antron Hill.

A police spokesperson said: "A BMW, part of a convoy of four cars, rammed a police car and then drove off.

"A BMW was subsequently located on fire nearby.

"A police search involving the police helicopter and a dog unit ensued and a suspect was located and arrested."

The police officer injured during the crash is described as having minor injuries.

The occupants of the other vehicles that were stopped were given fines for breaching Covid-19 social distancing rules.

Temporary Chief Superintendent Ian Drummond-Smith tweeted about the incident this morning, saying: "Police vehicle rammed overnight in Penryn by a suspicious car, injuring the officer.

"Offending vehicle located nearby on fire - suspected driver arrested.

"Great police work - officer only has minor injuries."

  • A 22-year-old man from Tuckingmill, Camborne, has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop after a road accident following an incident at around 11.30pm on Sunday, April 26, at Antron Hill, Penryn. He is currently in police custody.
