Prime time BBC programme The One Show is to feature Cornwall's celebrations of VE Day this Friday.

A virtual event that began in Penryn but is now spreading all over Cornwall and around the world has captured the imagination of producers, who have got in contact with organisers Rachel Gerred-Hart and Shelley Peters.

Now photos and video footage from the virtual VE Day - or V-VE Day - are to be shown as part of the 30-minute programme as part of a feature on how people are still marking the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe despite the Covid-19 lockdown.

Rachel said she and her fellow organiser were "incredibly proud" the event will be featured, but stressed: "Now this isn't about me or Shelley, it's about you.

"They want to see what you're doing within our commemoration.

"On national TV they want to feature your cakes your gas mask boxes and your bunting - they want to feature video clips from your gardens!

"We are on the map as the best household party in town."

She added that any video footage should be filmed widescreen, by turning phones on their side.

Rachel and Shelley want to see people celebrating at home and joining together online via their Voices of the Borough Facebook page and the V-VE DAY Virtual Garden Party #VirtualVE event page.

At 3pm this Friday Matt Warfox Barringer, Penryn Royal British Legion's standard bearer, will sound the Last Post, followed by silence to pay respects to all those who lost their lives during the war.

There will then be an afternoon of music via the Facebook page, ending with The Hummingbirds 'Grace' leading a closing song at 5pm, with their rendition of We'll Meet Again, which everyone is encouraged to join in with from their homes.

Kids can make a gas mask box and then send in a picture, with the most likes received on Facebook winning a small prize.

Adults can also get involved by baking a cake to a set recipe using war style ingredients, which will be posted in the run up, and then sending a photo of their creations.

Instructions for both can be found on the 'V-VE DAY Virtual Garden Party' event page on Facebook.

Rachel explained: "In days of war people couldn't travel, couldn't go see families, food was rationed, kids couldn't go out and play, there was limited access to doctors and medicines - it's not unlike our situation today."

The One Show begins on BBC One at 7pm this Friday.
