An outdoor activities charity near Falmouth that helps 4,000 people every year is calling on people to "pay forward" their support following a dramatic loss of income during the coronavirus pandemic that is threatening its future.

BF Adventure at Halvasso helps vulnerable people from across Cornwall learn new skills, challenge themselves and build their confidence.

Many of them are children and BF Adventure is an officially recognised provider of key services to young people who are vulnerable, have an Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) or are disabled.

However, it said it "may have to close forever" without financial support.

The charity said: "Covid-19 has seen a surge in domestic violence, loneliness, anxiety and feelings of isolation.

"For the already-vulnerable children and young people that BF Adventure supports through its charitable programmes, these present further challenges, thus creating a potentially overwhelming demand for these services.

"These young people already face some of life’s toughest challenges, including poverty, mental ill-health and other complex barriers. Now more than ever, there is an urgent need to support them; for many, home is not a safe place to be."

But it said due to Covid-19 the centre has lost nearly all its income, following the temporary closure of its site to groups and the public, and added: "Without financial support, this accessible site, which is 30 years in the making and has supported nearing 100,000 individuals to date, may have to close forever."

As such, BF Adventure has set up a crowdfunder that will allow supporters to help cover its overheads and continue to deliver services, with those donating receiving discounted activity vouchers.

These can be used onsite once the current restrictions lift, for activities ranging from climbing to watersports, coasteering, zip-lining and Cornwall’s first ever Via Ferrata experience.

Many of the activities are available as childcare, for which there are also vouchers available.

For those less adventurous, vouchers can be donated to a disadvantaged young person or entire family, helping them to make positive memories and learn to believe in themselves.

CEO Adrian Richards said: “These are tough times for everyone but every little you can give will enable our team to make a massive difference and to make positive changes that will last a lifetime.”
