TODAY is Flora Day in Helston.

It might not be celebrated in the usual way this year, but it is still Flora Day.

That much was abundantly clear from those whom the Packet spoke to in order to make the video above.

Featuring photos and videos from years gone by, we speak to some of those for whom it really is the biggest day of the year.

Additionally, The Museum of Cornish Life, based in Helston, has been producing a series of digital initiatives to share Cornish stories and traditions, like Flora Day, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A special video interview with John Eddy, chairman of the Furry Dance Stewards, around the traditions of Flora Day was released on the Museum’s Facebook and YouTube pages on Thursday – local organisations and residents are being called upon to share the video to mark the day of festivities.

On Wednesday the museum went live on Facebook at 11.30am with a virtual tour of its Flora Day items in the collection.

The museum has also been opening its doors digitally by providing personalised tours online through its Wish You Were Here initiative.

The project has given the likes of nursing and care home residents the chance to take a tour of the museum from the safety of their own surroundings, engaging and stirring nostalgic memories as a specialist guides the participant round the museum on an iPad.
