POLICE who have been searching for a missing man in the West Wight have discovered a body on an Isle of Wight beach this morning (Monday).

Isle of Wight Police confirmed they have discovered a body on Compton Beach.

It follows after police and Coastguard Rescue Teams began searching the area on Thursday.

A spokesperson for the police said: "This morning, the body of a man in his 70s was found on the shoreline of Compton Beach, Freshwater.

"The man’s family has been updated.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner."

The extensive search had involved WightSAR, Freshwater Lifeboat, Yarmouth RNLI Lifeboat, and Ventnor and Needles coastguard rescue teams, as well as the police.

Helicopters were also utilised in the search.
