Helston Waste and Recycling Centre is one of three to have been shut by Cornwall Council this morning over safety fears.

St Erth and Saltash HWRCs are also closed, due to long queues of traffic causing tailbacks.

They are unlikely to reopen again today,

The council said: "Please do not visit today, and return at another time."

One person wrote on Cornwall Council's Facebook page this morning to report a "huge safety issue" with people queuing for the recycling centre in Gay's Hill, Helston.

She said this was "forcing people to overtake the queuing traffic on a dangerous bend if they want to turn left towards Tresprison Industrial Park, or continue towards Gweek," adding: "Is it possible to resume the queuing system at Flambards which prevented this problem? It would be awful to see an accident occurring."

Cornwall Council has had to put out a warning over queues at its centres every day this week.

On Monday it asked people to go back to St Erth HWRC another time, saying: "Blocking the highway is dangerous."

Yesterday it issued another warning, over the "very long queues" at centres in Helston, Falmouth, St Erth, Bodmin and Saltash.

This week the council removed restrictions on what waste could be taken to the centres.

The number plate system remains in place, meaning vehicles are restricted to what days they can go.

As a result, vehicles where the last digit of the number plate is even - 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 - can only visit on an even date of the month, eg June 4, 6, 8, 10 etc.

Where the number plate has an odd digit at the end - 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 - then vehicles can only visit on an odd date of the month, eg June 5, 7, 9, 11 etc.

Personalised number plates should use the last digit found on the plate.
