Fears that two people may have been cut off by the tide after being thrown from their inflatable kayak into the sea saw the lifeboat launch near Mullion.

The casualties were seen in the area of Polbream Cove and an onlooker thought they had witnessed the two people in difficulty.

The Lizard Lifeboat launched just after 5.30pm last Wednesday and once at the scene two of the volunteer lifeboat crew members went out in the smaller Y-boat to carry out a more intensive search of the shoreline.

A lifeboat spokesperson said: "After a thorough search of the area it was ascertained that the casualties had managed to get safely ashore unaided by our service.

"The lifeboat had returned to her station at Kilcobben Cove by 7.30pm, refuelled and was made ready for service if required."

It marked Dan Atkinson's first official launch on service since being appointed coxswain of The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat, following the retirement of Andrew Putt in the spring.
