A FUNDRAISING CD put together by those behind the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival has raised more than £3,500.

As reported by the Packet, the double CD is made up of tracks donated by groups who have performed at the festival over the past 10 years.

The idea came about after the cancellation of this year's festival due to coronavirus and it was decided to donate money raised from sales to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity's Covid-19 Fund.

In addition, one of the festival's organisers, John Warren, and his wife Jooles, toured Mabe in a camel costume during the Clap for Carers events and raised a further £255 towards the total.

Those involved got together at The Cornish Store in Arwenack Street on Monday to celebrate the fundraising success.

The festival team said it would like to thank Jan and Ken Lardner of the Chantey Cabin for their help and guidance in the production of the CD.

With this year's festival proper unable to go ahead, a Virtual Sea Shanty Festival organised by the team was held online and viewed by around 100,000 people.

It raised around £13,500 for Falmouth RNLI, which is the charity that the event supports each year.

John said: "Whilst we are desperately sad that the festival could not be held this year, we feel that we have succeeded in continuing the spirit of this tremendous event and the support we have received from all quarters has been truly humbling.

"Plans are already in hand for next year's festival."

The CD is still available via www.falmouthseashanty.co.uk, from The Cornish Store and via www.thecornishstore.co.uk

The 2021 Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival will be held between June 11 and 13.
