A STUDENT in Year 11 at Camborne Science and International Academy has braved the shave to raise more than £1,500 for Cancer Research in memory of two members of her family and a friend’s mum, who all died from cancer.

Hannah Preston said: “In 2016 I lost my uncle Simon to cancer, and in 2019 I lost my grandpa and one of my closest friends lost her gorgeous mum. Shaving my head for Cancer Research is something I have wanted to do for quite a long time.”

The 16-year-old, who lives in Barripper, added: “I have donated my hair to the Little Princess Charity and given all the sponsorship money to Cancer Research. This disease has had such an impact on myself, my family, and my friends, I wanted to do something to help.”

Hannah took part in The Big Shave, which took place at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to do it in public, so I filmed the event and posted it on Facebook,” said Hannah.

“It was really scary, but I’m so happy I did it and it my hair is already growing back!”

Assistant Principal at CSIA, Rachel Trevarthen, said “It is incredible seeing Hannah going above and beyond to make a difference in what are challenging and unsettling times for us all at the moment. She exemplifies our school character values and everyone at CSIA would like to congratulate her on her display of altruism, resilience and integrity.”

Vice Principal Mark Fenlon added: “It’s so difficult for students who have lost someone they love, however, we have been genuinely inspired by Hannah’s attitude, approach and positive action. She really is remarkable and a credit to the CSIA community.”

All money raised by Hannah’s fundraiser will be donated to Cancer Research, supporting research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Hannah has also planned another fundraiser and will be taking part in the Nello 2020 Cycle.

She said: “I am also riding in the Nello 2020 Cycle, which was originally planned to be 55 miles around Exmoor in aid of the Force Cancer Charity. However, this bike ride is now to take place before August 16 at home in Cornwall, but will be recorded on Strava, and I am being joined by mum, dad and my brother, Thomas.

“I was really nervous about shaving my hair off, but I’m really happy with it now. It was so worth it and I can’t wait to raise as much money as possible for these two really important charities. It’s made me feel like I can do something to make a big difference.”
