SEVERAL local rugby teams have learned their schedules for the 2020/21 season.

This coming season will be like no other, however, with most leagues being split into two regional groups to reduce travelling at the start of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Falmouth, Penryn and Truro have been drawn together in their regional seven-team group in Tribute Western Counties West. They will be joined by Kingsbridge, Newton Abbot, Paignton and Wadebridge.

Bideford, Burnham on Sea, Chard, Honiton, Teignmouth, Tiverton and Wiveliscombe contest the other group.

Camborne are joined by Brixham, Exeter Uni, Exmouth, Ivybridge, Launceston and Okehampton in their group in the South West Premier, with Bournemouth, Drybrook, Hornets, Old Centralians, Old Redcliffians, Royal Wootton Bassett and Weston-super-Mare in the other.

The season’s fixtures have been divided into three windows, with each window given a deadline for which it must begin to beat the April/May deadline for the end of the season.

In the first window teams will play each team in their group home and away and dates have been allocated to these games.

The Rugby Football Union has set a start deadline of October 10 for the full three windows to be played.

If this is missed, then the season must begin by November 28 to all windows one and two to be played. If this is not achieved, then the season must start by February 6 to allow window one to be played.

The first round of games has been provisionally set for Saturday, September 5, although this is subject to the Government approving the return of grassroots rugby.

If the season does not start on time, each week will be automatically moved to the end of the first window, meaning each window’s fixtures must be completed before moving on to the second window.

Dates for windows two and three will be allocated once competitions are able to start.

For the South West Premier, Tribute Western Counties West and Tribute Cornwall/Devon, this means that the teams in each of the 14-team leagues have been split into two groups of seven teams.

Each team will play each team in their group twice for a total of 12 fixtures over the first 14-week window, with each team having two weekends with no game.

When this window is completed, and if there is sufficient time before the end of the season, the second window of fixtures will begin.

In this seven-week window, clubs will play the seven teams in the other group either home or away for a total of seven more fixtures, bringing the total games to 19.

If there is still time (i.e. if the season begins close to the usual September start) then teams will begin window three, where they will play the seven teams in the other group again with the venues being reversed.

If only the first window is possible a playoff between the leaders of the two groups will be staged to decide the league winner.

No decision has been made on the effect of this season on promotion/relegation for the 2021/22 season.
