Coronavirus rate in Cornwall more than doubles in a week

It comes from data published yesterday, showing the rolling seven-day rate of new cases of Covid-19 for every local authority in England.

The figures, for the seven days up to July 27, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent three days (July 28-30) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

In Cornwall and Isles of Scilly the rate has risen from 1.4 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days up to July 20 (eight new cases) to now sitting at 3.3 cases per 100,000 people, with 19 new cases in the seven days to July 27.

However, due to the figures changing daily the percentage rise alters each day also.

It means that had figures been taken a day earlier - ie representing cases up in the seven days leading to July 19, rather than July 20 - the rate would have been 0.9 cases per 100,000 people, as opposed to 1.4, which would have meant the rate of new cases had, at that time, tripled.

Official data on the government website for the R number (reproduction number) in the south west has now been updated today, placing it at between 0.8 and 1.1.

It means that for every one person with the infection a further 0.8 to 1.1 people are likely to go on to be infected.

It is on par with the south west and roughly average for must of the rest of the UK.

However, the latest data comes with a warning that SAGE (the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies) believes the current R number for England could be higher than what is shown, due to the time delay between someone being infected and them need healthcare.

In the latest modelling by the MRC Biostatistics Unit at Cambridge University, published on July 29, the south west region was putting at having an average R number of 1.04, with 0.77 at the lowest end and 1.38 at the highest.

This would put the south west as the region with the highest rate in the country again.

The Cambridge model is only one of the models that feeds into the official regional R rate estimate by SAGE (the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies).

Government advisers have always stressed that regional R numbers should be viewed with caution, because as the number of infections falls the values become less reliable.

The numbers of cases in Cornwall still remain low compared to other parts of the country, where there has been a much sharper rise.

Late last night parts of northern England were put under new lockdown restrictions, which ban separate households from meeting each other at home after a spike in Covid-19 cases.

It affects people in Greater Manchester, east Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire, with health secretary Matt Hancock telling the BBC the increase in transmission was due to people visiting friends and relatives.

Blackburn with Darwen currently has the highest rate of cases in the UK, with 89.3 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to July 27 - a total of 133 new cases recorded.

Leicester is in second place, although the seven-day rate has actually fallen from 67.8 to 60.2, but it still represents 214 new cases.

Other areas reporting notable week-on-week jumps include:

– Oldham (up from 23.3 to 54.3, with 128 new cases)

– Pendle (up from 27.4 to 42.7, with 39 new cases)

– Trafford (up from 15.2 to 41.0, with 97 new cases)

– Calderdale (up from 20.9 to 33.8, with 71 new cases)

– Swindon (up from 9.0 to 28.8, with 64 new cases)
