A UK-wide thunderstorm warning has been issued on the back of this weekend's heatwave and Cornwall has been included.

The Met Office said "severe thunderstorms" are expected on Monday and Tuesday - but warned that at this stage it could not pinpoint specific locations.

The weather forecasting agency said: "Some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms early next week - but there is significant uncertainty in location and timing."

It would follow three days of hot weather, for which the agency has increased its heat health alert level to 'Heatwave Action' for the south west, including Cornwall - although the we're not likely to reach the temperatures predicted for parts of the east and southeast of England, where the thermometer is expected to hit 37 degrees Celsius.

Currently the localised forecast for Falmouth and other parts of Cornwall next week is not showing thunder or lightning, but the whole county has been included in the blanket yellow weather warning.

The Met Office warned that for those affected there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail.

The Met Office has issued a UK-wide yellow thunderstorm warning

Such a phenomenon led to Coverack being severely flooded back in 2017, when 200mm of rain fell in three hours - making it the most intense rainfall ever recorded in the UK, according to flooding experts at Cornwall Council.

The agency said that where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to public transport.

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and an increased chance of accidents, and there is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

It added: "There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life."
