A PERSON has been rescued from a burning flat and another has been arrested following a suspected arson attack in Truro.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to St Thomas Close shortly after 8.30pm on Monday.

Fire engines from Truro, Tolvaddon and Falmouth were sent to the scene.

A spokesperson for the fire service said they arrived to find smoke coming from the building and there were reports of a person inside.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus got to work to put out the fire and rescued one person from a first floor flat.

The spokesperson added: "Police were requested, as well as an ambulance to treat a casualty for the effects of smoke inhalation.

"Arson was suspected; Devon and Cornwall Police arrested one person at the scene."

Police have now appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesperson said: "A man in his 50s, from Truro, has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody.

"A joint investigation is taking place to determine the cause of the fire.

"Fire service investigators, CID and scene of crime officers are attending the property this morning to carry out further investigations.

"Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact them via 101@dc.police.uk or by telephone on 101, quoting crime reference CR/065997/20."
