New Cornwall Hospice Care shop opens in Hayle

Shoppers were queueing outside the new store on Wednesday (August 12) before its official opening by the charity’s chief executive Paul Brinsley.

The new Cornwall Hospice Care shop, formerly the Boots Pharmacy, has more retail space and a bigger area for receiving donated goods.

Paul said: “The people of Hayle are always enormously supportive of our local shop because our St Julia’s Hospice is based in the town.

"I thank them for their continuing generosity and wish the team here the very best of luck.

"I’m delighted that we’re able to be a part of this vibrant community and a part of the high street as we believe it’s very important to shop local.

"Stores such as this one are vital to our charity and make a huge contribution to our work caring for terminally ill patients.

"Last year they collectively raised more than £1million net profit, sadly an achievement we won’t be able to replicate this year due to the pandemic.”

The shop, which will be open from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday to Saturday each week, replaces the former Cornwall Hospice Care shop in Commercial Road and is managed by Jim King.

Jim said: “It’s good to have more room as we are so well supported by our local community.

"We’ve made the store as Covid-secure as we can and I’d like to thank all those staff and volunteers who’ve helped shape this in to a very eye catching and modern shop.

"We’re accepting donations too, but because we have to isolate goods for 72 hours, we can only take small numbers of bags and boxes.

"We’ll be operating a ‘first-come-first-served’ system and once we’re full we won’t be able to accept any more donations on that day.

"I hope people understand and, of course, folk can take larger items or furniture to one of our donation centres, the nearest of which is in Pydar Street, Truro.”

The new Hayle shop is one of 17 Cornwall Hospice Care stores that the charity has now been able to reopen.
