A newly taken over restaurant in Falmouth could soon be adding breakfast to its menu after being supported in its bid to open for longer.

The Cove Bar and Restaurant and Maenporth, which was recently taken over by celebrity chef Michael Caines, has applied to vary its licence so that it can open two hours earlier Monday to Saturday and three hours earlier on Sundays.

This is so that it can serve breakfast from 9am each day.

It described the demand for this service as “significant.”

In its application the restaurant said: “The requested change in hours is to implement breakfast service so it will be the same year round.”

Currently the restaurant opens 11am to midnight Monday to Saturday and 12 noon to 11.30pm on Sundays.

There is no request to extend the hours at the end of the day.

The application came before Falmouth Town Council's licensing committee last night, with members supporting the proposal.

However, it must go to Cornwall Council's licensing committee before the changes are officially brought in.

Mr Caines, who appears regularly on television including BBC1's Saturday Kitchen, MasterChef and Sunday Brunch, took over The Cove earlier this year and opened on March 10 - before promptly having to temporarily close again less than two weeks later, when the coronavirus lockdown was enforced.

At the start of last month it was confirmed that he was also taking over the former Rick Stein's Porthleven restaurant.
