ONE new case of coronavirus has been confirmed for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in the latest update.

The figure now stands at 958 as of 4pm yesterday, compared to 957 a day earlier.

The rate of infection in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly stands at 167 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 490.

Across the UK there have now been 320,286 cases of the virus as of Monday afternoon – a rise of 1,089 on the previous day.

On Tuesday a coronavirus death was registered in Cornwall for the first time in a month.

This week's Office for National Statistics (ONS) information, released yesterday (Tuesday), showed that one death had been registered in a care home in Cornwall.

The latest figures from the ONS, which has been collating data for deaths in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community, relate to the week of August 1 to August 7, but were registered up to August 15.

It means that Cornwall's overall coronavirus death toll has risen to 209, the first increase since July 21, when it rose by one on the previous week's update.

There have been no hospital deaths in Cornwall since July 2. The total stands at 91.

Wednesday's update from NHS England, which only includes hospital deaths, confirms that nationally a further 15 people who tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 29,480.

Patients were aged between 56 and 93 years old. All had known underlying health conditions.

Their families have been informed.

Three new deaths were confirmed in the south west as a whole.
