The rate of new cases of coronavirus in Cornwall is steadily falling, the latest data shows.

The county is seeing a third less new cases than three weeks ago, in figures published yesterday, which also show a decline on last week.

In the seven days leading up to August 16 Cornwall and Isles of Scilly saw a rate of 2.1 new cases per 100,000 people. This represents 12 new cases in that time.

This is compared to last week's rate of 2.6 in the seven days to August 9, which was 15 cases. Three weeks ago Cornwall had 19 new cases and a rate of 3.3 cases per 100,000 people, in the seven days up to July 27.

However, this week's figures are higher than at the very start of month, when there were only eight new cases in the seven days up to August 3 and the rate was as low as 1.4.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent three days (August 17 to 19) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

This week saw Cornwall's first confirmed death relating to coronavirus in more than a month.

Nationally, Northampton continues to have the highest rate, thanks to an outbreak at the local Greencore sandwich factory.

A total of 262 new cases were recorded in the town in the seven days to August 16, the equivalent of 116.6 per 100,000 people - up from 38.7 in the seven days to August 9.

In Oldham, which has also been seeing a high number of cases, the rate has dropped from 105.4 to 84.3, with 200 new cases.

Other areas recording notable week-on-week jumps include:

– Manchester (up from 37.8 to 49.0, with 271 new cases).

– Salford (up from 24.3 to 36.7, with 95 new cases).

– Bury (up from 25.1 to 33.0, with 63 new cases).

– Birmingham (up from 22.4 to 30.0, with 343 new cases).
