A Cornwall hotel is honouring NHS heroes with its newly-named Captain Tom Moore Suite.

During lockdown, the team at the Alverton Hotel in Truro vowed to rename the Chapel Suite after Captain Thomas Moore who raised millions of pounds for the NHS at the height of the pandemic.

They have now outlined details of how the hotel will shows gratitude to NHS staff.

More than 100 emails were received from members of the public nominating their NHS hero for a free stay, and The Alverton is confirming that every single NHS staff member that was nominated will receive a complimentary stay in the suite, to be redeemed during off-peak months.

Here are just a few quotes from some of the moving nominations received by the Cornish hotel during lockdown:

“Please can I nominate my hero sister to stay in your special suite? She is a nurse in Cornwall and has been working so hard, including covering sickness and colleagues who are self-isolating. She has also been doing all of our family’s shopping, supporting our brother with a bereavement and has been stitching face masks in her spare time – all cheerfully without complaining.”

“I’m nominating my daughter Anna. Although concerned for her own health, she has looked after patients who have or who are suspected to have Covid-19. This has been physically and emotionally draining at times but she still turns up at 7am to begin another shift.”

“I’d like to nominate my sister Abigail, a midwife at Treliske Hospital. She has asthma herself but still puts herself on the front line to care for her patients.”

“Please could I nominate my sister Louise. She works as an OT in critical care but was upskilled during the pandemic to support the nursing staff in ITU. She supports Covid-19 patients daily. She has held the hands of the dying and cried with them. Louise has been so brave and is my hero. Witnessing things we can’t imagine and doing a job she never signed up for.”

“I would like to nominate my amazing boyfriend Simon. He is an Emergency Care Assistant based at St Austell Ambulance Station. He has moved out as I am asthmatic to keep myself and my children safe. Staying in a friend’s empty house, he is doing his usual long shifts but then has no one to come home to for a hug, chat or just a little bit of company.”

Both The Alverton in Truro, and sister hotel The Greenbank in Falmouth, will be offering NHS key workers the friends and family rate reserved for hotel staff members.

Ben Young, managing director says: “We want the NHS to feel like part of our extended family here at the Cornwall Hotel Collection, and this is why we are offering them the friends and family rate we give our own staff members. We also want to throw a special VIP party for NHS workers with lots of complimentary treats and surprises.”
