Fire fighters from across Cornwall are battling a large blaze that has broken out between Truro and Redruth evening.

At 5.04pm Fire Critical Control received the first of three 999 calls about a barn on fire in the Mount Hawke area.

Three crews were sent initially from Tolvaddon, Truro and Perranporth fire stations, as well as a group manager from Penzance.

Immediately upon arriving a call was made for a fourth engine, which came from Hayle.

This then became six engines just after 5.30pm, when two further crews from Tolvaddon and St Ives were sent due to the extent of the fire.

An incident command unit from St Just, an operational support unit from and a station manager from Bodmin were sent at the same time.

A Cornwall Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "The barn measures approximately 20 metres by 15 metres and is well alight.

"Two additional appliances have been mobilised for standby purposes."

A crew from Helston is currently providing fire cover in the Camborne-Pool-Redruth area, and another from Penzance is providing fire cover in the St Ives area.
