WENDRON United manager Jack Greenwood admits he was “embarrassed” by his side’s heavy 8-1 defeat at home to Camelford on Saturday.

The Dron came into the game hoping to make it three wins on the spin after victories over St Dennis and Godolphin Atlantic, but those hopes were quickly extinguished thanks to braces from each of Ed Harrison, Connor Rhodes and Tom Ellacott.

Matt Andrew and Denham Guild completed Wendron’s woeful afternoon, while Harry Roberts replied with a late consolation for the hosts.

“Embarrassed. Abysmal, didn’t turn up, just Jekyll and Hyde compared to last week,” said a furious Greenwood after the game.

“I had a good feeling about today, I thought the way we’ve played in the last couple of weeks and the way we’ve started the season we’ve been really good and competitive and we’ve battled but we were just a shadow of that today.

“Not one player worked hard enough, had enough quality of the ball, was brave enough for the 90 minutes, not just for a spell of the game. It was shocking all round.”

He added: “Take nothing away, Camelford are a very good side and with no disrespect to Godolphin or St Dennis, Camelford are maybe a step up from that and they were certainly a step up from us, that was clear.

"We just can’t get a run together, we’ll play well for a couple of games and then it will just come crashing down around us like that.

“I don’t know what it is. I don’t know whether it’s mentality or we need to actually change a winning side more, maybe we need to freshen things up and not allow that complacency to set in, but we’ve only won two games, we haven’t done anything major.”

Wendron’s afternoon got off to the worst possible start when Harrison shot past Adam Peters inside two minutes, with the Dron still reeling from the early opener when Andrew fired in the second goal in the sixth minute.

The Dron battled back from a similar deficit in their opening game at St Austell to draw 3-3, but there were no signs of history repeating itself at the weekend.

“It’s never a good start is it?” Greenwood said. “The only saving grace is we’d been there before with the St Austell game, and actually one thing I did say to the lads, and I’ve been saying to them recently, is: ‘You’ve been showing really good fight and resolve recently when you’ve gone behind or been pegged back, so if you do go a goal down or two goals down or whatever during the game, just stay in touch with them because you know you can get back into it’, but you can’t give teams like that a 2-0 head start after six minutes.”
