Data for the latest coronavirus cases in Cornwall and the rest of the UK has finally been updated this evening - and there has been a huge rise nationally.

This has been put down to a "technical issue, which has now been resolved" that meant some cases were not previously reported.

There have been 40 new cases recorded in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 1,437 since the start of the pandemic.

It means the average rate of cases is now 251.3 per 100,000 people during that time, which while rising is still one of the lowest in the country - with many local authorities now recording well over 1,000 cases per 100,000 people.

Nationally there have been 12,872 extra positive test results now reported - coming close to double the 6,968 recorded yesterday.

It brings the total number of cases recorded in the UK since the start of the pandemic to 480,017.

A statement on the government website reads: "Due to a technical issue, which has now been resolved, there has been a delay in publishing a number of Covid-19 cases to the dashboard in England.

"This means the total reported over the coming days will include some additional cases from the period between September 24 and October 1, increasing the number of cases reported."

The website was not updated until 8.38pm today, far later than the usual time of around 4pm.

What was updated earlier were the number of coronavirus-related deaths in hospitals, as recorded by NHS England over the past 24 hours.

Nationally a further 42 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 30,138.

Patients were aged between 44 and 100 years old. Three patients - aged between 49 and 82 - had no underlying health conditions. Their families have been informed.

The date of the death ranges from August 8 to October 2.

There has been one new death recorded in the south west over the last 24 hours, but none in Cornwall.

No deaths relating to coronavirus in Cornwall were registered in the most recent weekly period, latest Office for National Statistics figures reveal.

The figures from the ONS, which has been collating data for deaths in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community, relate to the week of September 12 to September 18, but were registered up to September 26.

It means that Cornwall's overall coronavirus death toll remains at 210.
