A fight that broke out in the centre of Helston over the weekend resulted in one of the town's business owners bearing the cost.

The door of Roy Dobles Jewellers in Coinagehall Street ended up shattered, after a "melee" involving up to ten people.

Shop owner Robin Doble said he had two witnesses who had seen the door being broken.

Mr Doble said: "There was a melee of some description, of about ten blokes.

"The glass was kicked in, but how it happened I can't tell you."

He said he received an email on Sunday morning about it from one of the witnesses, saying he found "the front of the door was bashed and the glass was all smashed."

The door has now been boarded up while it awaits repair.

Mr Doble added: "The guys that came out and boarded us up said they had been in Helston four times in the last week.

"It comes down to police presence really."

He also believed that the earlier 10pm closing time of pubs was not helping the situation.

"They have had their drinks, but they still want to be out and there's nowhere to go. So they're causing grief, really," he said.

A police spokesperson said: "Police are investigating criminal damage to a Helston business over the weekend.

"A glass door was smashed at Roy Doble Jewellers in Coinagehall Street around 10pm on Saturday, October 3.

"It appears that the damage was caused following an altercation in the street between a group of eight to ten men. The shutter over the door was kicked or punched, causing the glass to shatter.

"Police are investigating and appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them via 101@dc.police.uk or by telephone on 101, quoting crime reference CR/835451/20."
