Christmas is coming to Helston this year after it was confirmed there will be lights in the town this December.

Helston Christmas Lights chairman Rob Williams gave an update on Facebook over the weekend, after being asked almost every day: "Will Helston’s Christmas lights be going up this year?”

In news that will no doubt bring joy to thousands of people in the town and surrounding area, he said: "I’ve very pleased to announce that yes they will be, but on a scaled down basis.

"There won’t be our usual full spread of lights but we’ve put a plan together of what we can safely put up whilst maintaining social distance which means that Helston’s streets will still be nice and colourful to end this gloomy, dark year.

"The festoon strings will zig-zag down through town and the Monument outline frame will be the focal point at the bottom of town with the main 25ft high Christmas tree erected alongside."

Writing on behalf of the whole 'Christmas lights crew' he added that most of the wall mounted displays would be put up, but the large displays that span the width of the streets will be staying in storage for this year and it was hoped the group would be in a financial position to buy brand new displays for next year.

However, due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions Mr Williams said that there would be no switch-on night this year. Santa will also not be visiting his grotto in town and the 'Five Minutes of Mayhem' fireworks display will also not be taking place.

The lights themselves will be switched on at an unannounced time and day at the end of November.

Mr Williams said: "We’ve now got a few weeks preparation to get the lights ready to put up and, as long as Covid restrictions don’t prevent us doing so, we’ll start putting them up on November 8.

"Further updates will follow, but, for now, I hope you stay safe and well during these uncertain times."
