There have been 21 new positive cases of coronavirus recorded in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in today's latest update.

It means that as of 4pm today (Monday) there have now been a total of 1,863 positive test results since the start of the pandemic.

The rate of cases since the start of the pandemic has now risen to 325.8 cases per 100,000 people, although this still remains relatively low compared to many parts of the country.

Across the UK the overall case figure now sits at 741,212 - a rise of 18,804 cases on the previous day.

There have been no further deaths in Cornwall in the last 24 hours, with the county’s first hospital death since September 22 reported on Saturday, October 10.

The death was recorded at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro on Thursday, October 8 but was only reported in the figures from NHS England last Saturday.

It took the total number of hospital deaths in Cornwall up to 94, with 68 of them recorded at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust and 26 at the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust.

No deaths relating to coronavirus in Cornwall were registered in the most recent Office for National Statistics figures.

The latest figures from the ONS, which has been collating data for deaths in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community, relate to the week of September 26 to October 2, but were registered up to October 10. As such, the most recent hospital death on October 8 is still not registered in the data and is likely to be added in Tuesday's update.

It means that Cornwall's overall coronavirus death toll remains at 210 in the ONS figures.

Nationally a further 76 people who tested positive for Covid-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 31,047.

Their families have been informed.

Two of these deaths were recorded in the south west.

Christmas is coming to Helston this year after it was confirmed there will be lights in the town this December.

Helston Christmas Lights chairman Rob Williams gave an update on Facebook over the weekend, after being asked almost every day: "Will Helston’s Christmas lights be going up this year?”

In news that will no doubt bring joy to thousands of people in the town and surrounding area, he said: "I’ve very pleased to announce that yes they will be, but on a scaled down basis.

Supermarket bosses at Morrisons have released an update on the discount scheme for NHS workers across the country.

The ten per cent discount was first introduced in April 2020, days after the country entered the first national lockdown as a 'thank you to the hard-working health staff' from Morrisons.

In an update to shoppers, Morrisons said: "With hospitals again dealing with an increased number of coronavirus cases, NHS staff are supporting the country through the next stage of the pandemic. Morrisons is therefore to extend the discount."
