Two stalwarts of the British Legion have been rewarded for their fundraising efforts with the latest recipients of the High Sheriff of Cornwall’s Unsung Hero Award have been announced.

Royal British Legion volunteer Arthur Hooper has sold poppies for many years in Truro, raising thousands of pounds for the armed forces community while Anne Kemp, vice chair of the Royal British Legion Cornwall Committee and treasurer of the Truro branch, has for the last seven years tirelessly coordinated fundraising both in Truro and the work of the Royal British Legion in Cornwall.

Both Arthur and Anne were presented with their awards by the High Sheriff, Kate Holborow, at the poppy pop-up in the Tesco store in Garras Wharf on Monday.

The High Sherriff said: “The Truro branch of the Royal British Legion raised over £46,000 during last year’s appeal; a huge achievement and testament to the dedication and hard work of volunteers such as Anne and Arthur.

“This year more than ever our older veterans, the isolated and those directly affected by Covid need the support of the Royal British Legion and funds raised by the annual Poppy Appeal.

“Yet social distancing and adhering to Covid guidelines make the traditional poppy selling process difficult. It is so important that we all continue to support and wear our poppies with pride.

“Thank you Arthur and Anne for all you have done and I’m sure will continue to do in supporting our armed forces community.”

People in the community are being urged to find new ways to hold their Remembrance Day events this year because of Covid-19 restrictions

The British Legion is suggesting a wide range of Covid safe activities this year to remember the fallen.

These include holding a small Remembrance service in your garden, hosting an online meeting, setting up a community forum or creating an online exhibition.

Alternatively open an online book of Remembrance that family, friends and others can sign as a mark of respect or write letters of Remembrance to veterans or serving personnel.
