Helston's community emergency response team has been re-activated to help people living in and around the town get through the second lockdown.

This was first set up by Helston Town Council back at the end of March, when lockdown was originally introduced to help fight the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

With the support of other volunteers from the community, the team helped residents living in isolation and need of support.

Now, with Cornwall and England back under a further four weeks of tightened restrictions, the council is once again opening up the response team for people to call if they need help with shopping, delivering medical supplies or other tasks made more difficult.

It is hoped ore people will come forward to volunteer for the team and support those in need.

Town clerk Chris Dawson said: "We have contacted all the previous volunteers to establish who will be available during this second lockdown and are putting a fresh callout for new volunteers."

The telephone number for residents to call is the same as last time: 01326 565761.

Initially the line will be manned 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and has already been launched.

When it first began back in March, the team volunteers found themselves supporting hundreds of people in its first week.

At that time, Helston mayor John Martin said: “The overwhelming emotions from everyone involved have been those of immense positivity, satisfaction and gratitude, whether that be from volunteers or those receiving assistance.”
