*WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS* Dessert week proved bittersweet in the Bake Off tent for Cornwall's Marc Elliott, as it saw him lose his place in show.

In a tough quarter final, which challenged the bakers to make miniature cheesecakes, an archaic Sussex Pond Pudding and an artistic jelly cake, it was anyone's game heading into the second day.

Marc from St Eval's New York style signature cheesecakes with apricot were declared too large, with Prue rather enigmatically declaring: "You can't taste the apricot until you get to the apricot."

However, things picked up in the technical challenge, which saw him come second out of an admittedly pretty low-achieving pack.

It all fell apart in the showstopper though - quite literally.

With his two-tier jelly sitting on top of "over-done" hazelnut meringue (he wanted crunchy - he got it), a chocolate mousse that behaved more like a ganache and a "curdled" strawberry mousse, his position in the competition was as unstable as his cake efforts.

His fate appeared sealed when Paul told hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas: "We've got to look at the showstopper carefully."

He was sent packing back to Cornwall, missing out a place in the semi final - much to the relief of fellow contestant Peter, who looked uncharacteristically nervous throughout the entire episode, and with good reason.

A sanguine Marc told the camera however: "I came to the Bake Off to face my anxiety, to face failure, to face all those things as people we're quite uncomfortable dealing with.

"I've definitely learnt a bit more about myself and maybe, from what a lot of people have said, to give myself a bit of credit as well, which probably I don't."

Paul Hollywood summed up by saying: "Marc's probably been on probably the biggest journey of all the bakers in the tent.

"He started off pretty badly then as each week has passed by he's got better, and better, and better, and it's a shame to see him go."

The episode reflected Marc's time in the show, which saw his face a slightly rocky start in week one before winning star baker the following week in bread week - one of his areas of expertise.

Bread was one of the first things Marc started baking following a motorbike accident in 2016 that saw him lose a leg.
