The part of the main road between Helston and the Lizard Peninsula that was closed to traffic earlier has now reopened.

The road was shut due to an incident between the back entrance to RNAS Culdrose and Travis Perkins builders' merchants, on the B3293.

The exact reason for the closure is  still not clear. The Packet has contacted Devon and Cornwall Police for more details, but so far the media team has been unable to find a log.

INRIX traffic reports described the closure as "an accident" but there is also a local suggestion that a power cable was down. Neither have been confirmed officially yet.

However, traffic sensors are now showing that the road has reopened again - just in time for the school run.

Drivers had reported being turned around and having to find alternative routes to the Lizard Peninsula, via back roads.

Google Maps showed the area to be heavily congested with traffic either side of the incident site.
