Truro Farmers Market is hosting extra markets on the city's Lemon Quay in the run up to Christmas, amid unprecedented demand from the public and from market traders.

Over the course of this year the market has seen a marked rise in footfall as shoppers embrace the outdoor shopping experience.

Applications from new traders have increased significantly, giving the market a renewed buzz.

Since its inception in 1997 the cooperative has sought to provide an alternative to supermarkets, multi-national retailers and out-of-town shopping centres.

Market coordinator Stewart Girvan said: “The events of this past year have reminded us all of the true value of small, independent businesses – those that struggled to survive but continued to serve their local communities during the pandemic. Customers are now more determined than ever to show their support as we approach the festive season.

“We are thrilled to be able to respond to the demand, and have secured lots of additional days on Lemon Quay to enable people to shop with local farmers, small food producers and craftspeople in the run-up to Christmas.”

As well as extra daytime markets, there will be three late-night shopping events on Wednesday December 9, 16 and 23, with the market stalls staying open until 9pm.

Kate Martin from Treway Farm, who joined Truro Farmers Market as a new trader this year, said: “I think a lot of people just aren’t comfortable in busy supermarkets and high street shops.

"The outdoor market, with its widely spaced stalls and unhurried feel, is a much more inviting prospect.

"It’s also a good opportunity for some safe social contact, something a lot of people are craving right now!”

Daytime Markets will run between Wednesdays and Sundays for the month of December until Christmas Eve, from 9am - 4pm, or 10 - 4pm on Sundays.

The weekly market in Falmouth will also continue to take place on The Moor every Tuesday morning.
