This month marks the end of an area for one family business that has been serving the Camborne and Redruth area since not long after the Second World War.

After 67 years in business Powells Garage will close its doors for the final time on December 15.

The garage was first established in 1953 by the brothers Reg and Raymond Powell. The family business operated from its Agar Road site, opposite Morrisons near Redruth, for 57 years before relocating just down the road to Barncoose ten years ago.

The Powell family and their dedicated team have worked tirelessly over the years to provide the best possible service to thousands of customers using Powells as their local garage of choice for services, MOTs and vehicle repairs, as well as car sales.

It has paid off, with their hard work recognised nationally with multiple awards and commendations over the years. Powells also became the first motor dealer in Cornwall to be invited to join Trading Standards ‘Buy with Confidence’ scheme.

Now, after a long and fulfilling career, Heather and Kenneth Powell, the senior directors, have made the difficult decision to retire from the business.

Falmouth Packet:

Their sons, Jon and Tom Powell, have decided not to take up the reins at Powells Garage because they have other interests they wish to pursue.

A spokesperson for the garage said: "They recognise that, with the recent arrival of the fully electric and hybrid motor car, the motor trade industry is preparing for a massive shift in a different direction.

"That means the future role for the independent service garage will likewise have to change to accommodate the new technology.

"Emotions are very mixed – sadness, certainly, because this is the end of an era for the Powell family business.

"Yet there is a sense of keen anticipation for the time ahead and for what the future holds."

Falmouth Packet:

Ken and Heather plan to move on with their respective lives in active retirement outside of the motor trade.

The Powell family said they could not say goodbye without giving their "huge appreciation and thanks" to their hardworking team who made it all possible, as well as to the local people who have supported the family garage business over the last 67 years.

Many of them have become friends, the family saying they would "definitely be missed."

Finally, the Powell family said: "We would like to sincerely wish all of their staff, customers and suppliers all the very best for the future."
