PENRYN'S Christmas lights have been switched on this evening but without the usual fanfare or crowds because of the Covid pandemic.

Councillor Mark Snowdon quietly went round the town flicking the five switches needed to to light up the whole town for the festive season including the iconic clock tower. The Mayor of Penryn, Coun Chaz Wenmoth, who has just celebrated his 80th birthday, has already performed this year's virtual switch-on as a special post-birthday treat.

Falmouth Packet:

Those local residents who live in the town did come out to get some pictures of the stunning display with businesses and some resident entering into the spirit by lighting up trtheir own windows and putting Christmas trees outside their properties.

Because of the close proximity of volunteers working together sorting lights then installing them, and the majority of volunteers having to self-isolate due to age and vulnerability the usual display was not rolled out until next year.

Falmouth Packet:

Although the number of decorated Christmas trees has been reduced this year there is still be a good number of trees to set the scene for the festive season.

Falmouth Packet:

There was no Christmas Concert this year with everything put on hold until next year.

The Shop Window Competition has been delayed until December 18, when the mayor along with the Mayoress Tracey Heart will judge the competition, the theme will be Celebrate Christmas. A bottle of bubbly will be awarded along with a certificate of appreciation.

People are being encouraged to come into the town once the lockdown is over on Wednesday December 2 to enjoy the lights and to support local businesses this Christmas.
