A train that caught on fire on Cornwall's main rail line earlier is continuing to cause problems to services into the evening.

It is after Fire Critical Control received a 999 call from Network Rail to say there was a fire on a train travelling towards Par, just before 11.30am.

Passengers were moved to a safe part of the train while crews from St Austell, Lostwithiel and Fowey were scrambled, along with two fire officers.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue said: "On arrival at the RVP point crews established communication with the train driver who informed crews that the automatic fire suppression system had actuated, and crews using breathing apparatus were deployed to confirm the fire was out.

"When safe and the fire confirmed out, the train will be moved to Par Station and all passengers have been relocated to a safe part of the train."

The fire led to a number of services being cancelled, due to all lines being blocked by the incident, and also affected a number of trains that were delayed or did not call at certain stations.

GWR said that all lines had now reopened, but that some services may still be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is currently expected until 7pm.

It said First Kernow route 27: Truro (Bus Station) - St Austell (Station) - Bugle (The Square) - Roche (Victoria Road Travelodge) was taking passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.

Issues continuing into this evening include certain trains now not stopping at Truro and St Austell.

These are:

  • 17:29 Truro to Cardiff Central due 22:20

This will start from Par and will no longer call at Truro and St Austell.

  • 17:54 Truro to Plymouth due 19:10

This will also start from Par and no longer call at Truro and St Austell.

If you hold a valid single, return, or weekly ticket, you will be able to claim compensation for delays of 15 minutes or more. Keep your ticket and visit GWR.com/DelayRepay
