Helston Athletic Women extended their lead at the top of the Cornwall Women’s Football League West division to three points after a resounding six-goal victory at St Agnes.

Katy Barker-Thomas and Sasha Sparkes both scored hat-tricks to take their combined tally for the season to 20 as the Blues made it four wins from four league games this season in what is to be their final competitive match of 2020.

Barker-Thomas opened the scoring in the 34th minute when she volleyed home Sparkes’ left-wing cross at the far post.

It was two only a few minutes later as Sparkes turned scorer, meeting Rachael Hannaford’s through ball and firing it home.

There was time for a third before the break as Barker-Thomas grabbed her second of the game only two minutes later as Helston enjoyed a commanding lead.

The score remained the same until the 72nd minute when Sparkes finally put the game out of sight, tapping home from three yards from Barker-Thomas’ cross.

The result may have been in no doubt by now but those in attendance were treated to a sublime fifth goal on 78 minutes. Barker-Thomas controlled a pass on halfway and sprayed it out to the edge of the 18 yard box to Sparkes, who beat two defenders and slotted past the ‘keeper to complete her hat trick in style.

There was still time for Barker-Thomas to complete her own treble in the 89th minute, finishing from a tight angle ten yards out.
