Cornwall saw a surprise spread of snow yesterday that intensified as the day went on.

A yellow weather warning for ice and snow had been in place from 10am on Wednesday until 6am on Thursday.

Some areas of north Cornwall then woke up to a layer of the white stuff, with the A30 at Bodmin closed after a build-up of snow and ice left lorries unable to travel up the hill.

However, further south there was sunshine in the morning before this turned into rain, mixed with some sleet and hail - that is until the evening.

As temperatures dropped, sleet turned into snow on higher ground, with Four Lanes and Stithians among the areas where it began to build up.

Falmouth and Helston Police were forced to put out a warning to take extra care on the roads, saying "road conditions are extremely dangerous in the Falmouth and Helston area," with a crash taking place on the A39 between Arch Hill and Kea.

A yellow warning for ice was put in place from 6pm last night until 9am today, from the A39 Helston to Falmouth up to Truro and north for the rest of Cornwall, apart from in coastal areas.

The Met Office warned: "Following heavy showers, wet surfaces are likely to freeze quite quickly, leading to ice, especially where untreated."

The excitement of seeing snow led to plenty of people posting photos and videos on social media - which then turned into safety warnings as the day went on and temperatures began to drop below zero.
