Cornwall has seen a further rise in hospital deaths involving patients who tested positive for coronavirus on a day where the local daily case figures have reached a new record high.

The death took place at the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust on Christmas Day (December 25) and was reported in today's figures by NHS England.

It follows two new deaths being recorded at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day last week, and reported in Thursday's update.

There have now been 81 deaths registered to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust and 28 to the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust, bringing the overall total number of hospital deaths in Cornwall to 109.

The overall total number of deaths in Cornwall - including deaths in care homes and other settings - remains at 191, due to the difference in reporting times by NHS England and the Covid-19 Dashboard.

Nationally, a further 383 people who tested positive for Covid-19 died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 51,051.

Patients were aged between 27 and 100 years old. All except 11 – aged 36 to 95 years old – had known underlying health conditions, and their families have been informed.

The dates of their deaths ranged from November 18 to January 1, with the majority being on or after December 29.

Of these, 23 deaths were in the south west.

Across the whole of the UK there have been 445 further people to have died within 28 days of their first positive test result, bringing the total number of UK deaths to 74,570. This figure includes people in care home and other settings.

The latest Covid-19 case information for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has now been published this afternoon.

As of 3.30pm today, (Saturday, January 2) there have been 343 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours.

The total number of cases in the local authority area since the start of the pandemic is now 6,441.

There were 1,008 cases recorded in the seven days leading up to December 28. Data from the most recent five days is not shown due to being incomplete.

This represented a weekly rate of 176.3 cases per 100,000 people.

The UK had 57,725 new cases reported in 24 hours, bringing the total to 2,599,789 nationally since the start of the pandemic.

The government has given a warning about the information during the holiday period.

It states that UK cases and deaths will be updated every day throughout the holiday period, but with no data for Northern Ireland on December 24 to 28, no data over deaths on Scotland on December 25 to 28 and January 1 and 4, and no data for Wales on December 25 and January 1.

It warns: "UK totals for each day will reflect the sum of the nations which reported data. Cases and deaths that would have been reported during these periods are likely to instead be reported on the following days.

"As a result, any changes to published data should be interpreted with caution during this period, as they may be a result of changes to reporting schedules."
