News is coming from journalists at Downing Street this afternoon that schools are to close and the entire country will be placed under Tier 4.

Boris Johnson is to address the nation tonight over the further steps to be taken to tackle the rise in Coronavirus cases.

He will be making a televised address to the nation at 8pm.

Although no details have been formally released by the government, political journalists at Downing Street have released 'leaked' information about what the announcement will be.

Robert Peston, political editor of ITV News, has written on Twitter: "PM will be directly addressing the nation. It won’t be a press conference.

"Tier 4 restrictions will be imposed everywhere. Schools closed. No more team games in parks. But outdoor exercise will still be allowed."

The annoucement comes as Nicola Sturgeon announced that Scotland will be going into full lockdown from tonight.

With the latest data showing a 33 per cent rise in the number of confirmed coronavirus patients in hospital in England between Christmas Day and January 2, Mr Johnson has come under increased pressure from health professionals for another lockdown.
