The number of hospital deaths in Cornwall involving patients diagnosed with coronavirus has risen again.

Three further deaths have been recorded at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust.

One took place on December 29 and another two patients died yesterday (Monday, January 4), with all three being reported in today's figures from NHS England (Tuesday, January 5).

It follows two new deaths being recorded at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, and another at the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust on Christmas Day.

There have now been 84 deaths registered to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust and 28 to the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust, bringing the overall total number of hospital deaths in Cornwall to 112.

The new overall total number of deaths in Cornwall – including deaths in care homes and other settings – is now 193.

Nationally a further 582 people who tested positive for Covid-19 have died in hospitals in England, bringing the total number to 52,395.

Patients were aged between 29 and 103 years old. All except 25 – aged 56 to 101 years old – had known underlying health conditions and their families have been informed.

The dates of their deaths ranged from November 5, 2020 to January 4, 2021 with the majority being on or after January 1.

Of these, 27 deaths were in the south west.

With regards to the UK, another 830 people have died within 28 days of their first positive test result, bringing the total number of UK deaths to 75,431. This figure included people in care home and other settings.

The latest Covid-19 case information for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has now been published.

As of 4.22pm today, (Tuesday, January 5) there have been 350 new cases recorded in the previous 24 hours.

The total number of cases in the local authority area since the start of the pandemic sat at 7,267.

There were 1,725 cases recorded in the seven days leading up to December 31. Data from the most recent five days was not shown due to being incomplete.

This represented a weekly rate of 301.7 cases per 100,000 people.

The number of people testing positive for coronavirus in the UK has increased by 60,916 – the first time that more than 60,000 has been recorded since the pandemic began – bringing the total to 2,774,479 nationally since the start of the pandemic.
