It may be one of the oldest cliches in the book – but today proved that sometimes they really are true when firefighters were called to rescue a cat stuck up a tree.

Critical Control received at call at 10.25am from the RSPCA asking for help.

A cat had managed to climb a particularly large tree in the Hayle area – only to get stuck 30 feet up.

Crews from Tolvaddon and Hayle fire stations, as well as an officer from the Hayle Tri-service – combining police, ambulance and fire and rescue service – were all called to help.

A Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Appliances from Hayle and Tolvaddon attended and successfully rescued the cat."

It is not the first time this week that the fire service has been called to help with something other than putting out fires.

On Thursday St Ives firefighters were called to the Penbeagle Estate, where a two-year-old boy had managed to lock his mum out of the house by mistake.

He had been playing with the key in the back of the door while his mum brought the shopping in – only to find himself home alone.

A spokesperson for the St Ives crew said: "[We] gained access by breaking a small window at the rear of the property and putting our smallest firefighter through! Door unlocked from the inside."
