A sizeable increase in Covid-related deaths in Cornwall's hospitals has been recorded in today's update.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust has registered a further seven deaths.

One death took place last Friday (January 8), one on Saturday (January 9), two on Sunday (January 10), one on Monday (January 11) and two on Tuesday (January 12).

It brings the total number of deaths at the Trust to 94.

There have now been 223 deaths in Cornwall's hospitals in total, with a further 29 taking place at the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust since the start of the pandemic.

The overall total number of deaths in Cornwall – including deaths in care homes and other settings – now sits at 210 deaths recorded in the 28 days after a positive test result, a rise of eight in the past 24 hours. However, the total number of deaths with Covid-19 simply on the death certificate remains at 251 on the government dashboard.

Nationally a further 1,012 people who tested positive for Covid-19 have died in hospitals in England in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number to 57,828.

Patients were aged between 39 and 102 years old. All except 46 – aged 39 to 98 years old – had known underlying health conditions and their families have been informed.

The dates of their deaths ranged from May 8, 2020 to January 12, 2021 with the majority being on or after January 6.

Of these, 49 deaths were in the south west.

In the UK overall a new record high in the number of deaths over a 24-hour period has been recorded, as another 1,564 people died within 28 days of their first positive test result. This brings the total number of UK deaths within 28 days to 84,767, and 89,243 for all deaths with Covid-19 on the certificate. The figures include people in care home and other settings.

The latest Covid-19 case information for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has now also been published this afternoon.

As of 4pm today, (Wednesday, January 13) there has been 255 new cases recorded in the previous 24 hours.

The total number of cases in the local authority area since the start of the pandemic now sits at 9,457.

There were 2,069 cases recorded in the seven days leading up to January 8. Data from the most recent five days is not shown due to being incomplete.

This represents a weekly rate of 361.8 cases per 100,000 people.

The number of people testing positive for coronavirus in the UK has increased by 47,525, bringing the total to 3,211,576 nationally since the start of the pandemic.
