A hospital in Cornwall put itself into lockdown on Sunday evening after staff members reportedly saw a man with a gun at the edge of the grounds.

Camborne-Redruth Community Hospital decided to lock down the facilities as a result, until the matter could be investigated.

The man was said to be with a child and "acting suspiciously".

Police were contacted at around 7.40pm, with officers attending.

However, nothing suspicious was found.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police received a report at around 7.40pm yesterday evening (Sunday January 17) that staff at Camborne-Redruth Community Hospital had decided to lock down the hospital after staff members reported seeing a man accompanied by a child acting suspiciously at the perimeter of the grounds.

"Police officers attended and did not discover anyone or anything suspicious."

It is understood that the man and the child had been hunting on the perimeter.

A spokesperson for the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust, which Camborne-Redruth is part of, said: “We are pleased to confirm the situation at Camborne and Redruth was safely resolved, after staff put in place routine safety measures having seen a man acting suspiciously in the grounds.

“We’d like to thank our staff for their professionalism in response to a potentially dangerous situation.”
