The number of hospital deaths relating to coronavirus in Cornwall has risen by double figures today.

Previously, there had been a total of 136 hospital deaths involving patients who have tested positive for Covid-19, but that figure has now risen to 146 in today's update from NHS England.

It follows a further six deaths being recorded at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, with one on January 15, two on January 16, two on January 17 and one on January 18. This brings the total number of people to have died in the Trust's hospitals to 111.

Another four deaths have also been recorded at the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust, on January 15, 16 and 18, bringing the total to 35.

The overall total number of deaths in Cornwall – including deaths in care homes and other settings – has risen to 250 recorded in the 28 days after a positive test result. The total number of deaths with Covid-19 simply on the death certificate is now at 257 on the government dashboard, including six this week.

Nationally, a further 1,027 people who tested positive for Covid-19 have died in hospitals in England in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number to 63,322.

Patients were aged between 29 and 101 years old and all except 49 – aged 37 to 99 years old – had known underlying health conditions, said NHS England. Their families have been informed.

The date of their deaths ranged from December 14 to January 19, with the majority being on or after 12 January 12.

Of these, 56 deaths were in the south west.

Yesterday, in the UK overall, another 1,820 people have died within 28 days of their first positive test result – the highest number of UK deaths on a single day since the pandemic began.

This brings the total number of UK deaths within 28 days to 93,290. These figures include people in care home and other settings.

As of 4pm today (Wednesday, January 20) there has been 151 new cases in the region recorded in the previous 24 hours.

The total number of cases in the local authority area since the start of the pandemic sat at 10,853. Saturday's update saw the number of cases in the area rise past the 10,000 milestone.

There were 1,594 cases recorded in the seven days leading up to January 15. Data from the most recent five days is not shown due to being incomplete.

This represented a weekly rate of 278.8 cases per 100,000 people.

The number of people testing positive for coronavirus in the UK also increased by 38,905 in 24 hours.

This brought the total to 3,505,754 nationally since the start of the pandemic.

As of Monday, 4,266,577 people in the UK had received their first Covid-19 vaccination dose, while 456,866 people have received their second dose.
