The number of deaths in Cornwall's hospitals involving patients testing positive for Covid-19 has risen for the second day running.

A further two hospital deaths have been recorded in today's update (Wednesday, January 27).

It brings the total number of deaths relating to the virus at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust to 129, and to 40 at the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust.

The total number of deaths relating to the virus in Cornwall's hospitals is now 169.

It follows seven people confirmed to have died at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust in yesterday's update (Tuesday).

It means 35 Covid-related deaths in Cornwall's hospitals have been reported since last Wednesday (January 20).

Eight deaths were confirmed in Sunday's update, with five on the preceding Friday, three on Thursday and ten on Wednesday, across Cornwall's two hospital trusts.

The overall total number of deaths in Cornwall – including deaths in care homes and other settings – has risen to 297 recorded in the 28 days after a positive test result, including eight today.

The total number of deaths with Covid-19 simply on the death certificate remains at 281 on the government dashboard, with this figure updated weekly.

Nationally, a further 973 people who tested positive for Covid-19 have died in hospitals in England in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number to 68,894.

Patients were aged between 29 and 103 years old. All except 21 - aged 52 to 93 years old - had known underlying health conditions and their families have been informed.

The dates of the deaths range from November 18, 2020 to January 26, 2021 with the majority being on or after January 21.

Of these 95 were in the south west.

Yesterday saw the UK pass the unwanted milestone of more than 100,000 people having now died of coronavirus in the UK.

Today another 1,725 people have died within 28 days of their first positive test result.

This brings the total number of UK deaths within 28 days to 101,887. These figures includes people in care home and other settings.

As of 4.20pm today (Wednesday, January 27) there have been 125 new cases in the region recorded in the previous 24 hours.

The total number of cases in the local authority area since the start of the pandemic now sits at 11,854.

There were 1,048 cases recorded in the seven days leading up to January 22. Data from the most recent five days is not shown due to being incomplete.

This represents a weekly rate of 183.3 cases per 100,000 people.

The number of people testing positive for coronavirus in the UK has also increased, by 23,308 in the previous 24 hours.

This brings the total to 3,715,054 nationally since the start of the pandemic.

There are 7,164,387 people in the UK that have now received their first Covid-19 vaccination dose, while 474,156 people had received their second dose.
