The number of areas showing cases of Covid-19 in Cornwall has risen again in the past few days but overall cases have still fallen by 25 per cent week-on-week.

In Wednesday's midweek update there were eight 'cluster' areas no longer showing cases, which was the most for many weeks, but today's update on the Government dashboard has seen a rise again meaning there are only four areas not highlighted: Wadebridge, St Germans & St Mellion, Poundstock & Kilkhampton, and Bude & Stratton.

The map shows clusters when there are at least three confirmed results, with anywhere with between zero and two cases shows white in order to "protect the privacy of individuals and prevent disclosure."

Areas that have seen a small rise in cases, putting them back on the map, are St Just & Land's End (now threes cases), Perranporth & Goonhavern (now four cases), Looe & Polperro (now eight cases) and Camelford & Tresmeer (now eight cases).

However, there is still positive news today as overall Cornwall has seen a 25 per cent fall in new cases week-on-week.

There were 1,018 cases recorded in the seven days to January 25, which was 337 fewer than the total during the previous weeks and marks a fall of 24.9 per cent.

The most recent five days are not shown due to incomplete data.
Cornwall now has a rolling rate of 178.0 cases per 100,000 people, compared to 236.8 per 100,000 last Saturday and 313.0 cases per 100,000 on January 16.

Penzance has also dropped from a combined 105 cases across its three clusters a week ago to now having 64 cases, after Penzance North saw cases halve from 40 to 20 and Penzance Quay also drop from 51 to 25, although Penzance South & Newlyn has risen by five cases, to 19.

Helston, which at one point had the highest number of cases of any single cluster in Cornwall earlier this month, has seen a 62.7 per cent fall week-on-week to now only show 22 cases, compared to 59 cases last Saturday and 94 on January 18.

Some areas in east Cornwall have seen rises though, such as Bodmin East where have been 51 new cases over the seven-day period, a rise of 12 on the previous week and giving it a rolling rate of 604.1 per 100,000, which puts it well above the average rate compared to England now.

However, while the other half of the town, in Bodmin West, still has one of the higher rolling rates at an average of 400.1 cases per 100,000, it has actually seen a small drop in cases, from 34 to 32.

Other areas include Tywardreath & Fowey, where cases have jumped from 16 to 38, and Lostwithiel & Penwithick, where there are now 51 cases showing – a rise of 14.

The map shows positive cases by 'Middle Super Output Area' - the name the government gives to the break-up of larger towns and groups of neighbouring towns and villages, with groupings covering a greater area than others.

The minimum population in each area is 5,000 and the average is 7,200.
