A popular Cornish tourist attraction has had a much-loved, family-designed sign disappear from their restaurant.

The incident is thought to have occurred either late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning as, when the owners arrived at the castle, they discovered that the sign, which had been hand-made by the owner's father, had disappeared.

CCTV is in operation at he site but, unfortunately, isn't able to cover the area from which the sign has disappeared.

In a post made on social media, Andy Sawalha, whose father Munir had taken over the restaurant in the early 90s, said: "This really is heartbreaking as my father had this sign made years ago and has since passed away and it feels today like a little piece of his was taken."

This isn't the first spate of bad luck to hit the Carn Brea Castle Restaurant in recent months as, back in December of 2020, the restaurant was broken into and several items stolen.

Luckily, due to an outpouring of support from the local community on social media, a number of items that were taken have since been returned.

The restaurant, which is located within Carn Brea Castle, has been running since the 1980's and has become a well-known and much-loved part of the Cornish countryside.

The castle itself is thought to date back to around 1379 AD and has been restored numerous times, most notably in the 1800's by the Bassett family and then again in 1930 by EC Carvolth.

It was then bought in 1974 by Percy Williams Ltd who carried out extensive work to restore and maintain the character and atmosphere of the building.

The surrounding area of Carn Brea is thought to have been inhabited for approximately 6000 years with excavations revealing hints of Neolithic, Bronze age, Celtic and Roman life in the area.

If you or someone you know has any information that could assist in the recovery of the sign, please contact Carn Brea Castle Restaurant on Facebook.
